The demand for plant-based proteins is rising in Germany. The market recorded double-digit growth between 2018 and 2019. According to ConsumerIntel360, the market is expected to record a CAGR of 15.5% over the forecast period (2020–2027).

In the last decade, the plant-based protein sector has seen immense consolidation in Germany, as an increasing number of large and small businesses are offering their own private label plant protein solutions. Moreover, the startup ecosystem of Germany is also supporting the growth of the plant protein industry. Through their innovation in ingredients and product development, these companies are expected to create more interest from consumers towards plant-protein.

With the increasing shift of consumers towards plant-based diets, several supermarkets and retailers across Germany are offering their own private label products. For instance:

  • Tailoring to the growing demand of consumers, Aldi launched its own plant-based range that includes pizza, sandwiches, burgers, chocolates, sausages, ready meals, dairy, and meat alternatives. In December 2019, the retailer extended its product line and launched its own plant-based pizza in three different flavors catering to the high demand for such products among the consumers
  • In January 2020, the discount supermarket chain Netto Marken-Discount announced the expansion of its plant-based product line with a new brand Vegetar!a. All these products are available in their stores across Germany

In addition to this, leading plant-based food manufacturers from around the world are partnering with Germany-based retailers to capitalize on the rising demand. For instance:

  • In May 2019, Beyond Meat started selling its fake meat burger in Lidl stores across Germany
  • After Lidl, Beyond Meat also partnered with Netto in August 2019
