Perfect Day, a start-up animal-free dairy protein producer has teamed up with international food processing and commodities trading corporation Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) based out of Chicago, for optimization and scaling of casein and whey protein production. The production will be done using fermentation in microflora in alternative of using farmed animals. This new variety of dairy proteins are vegan and free from lactose, gluten and soy. But it will be equivalent to commercial whey proteins currently available in the market in terms of nutritional value and taste. They can also be used in various food and beverages as commercial animal based whey proteins. Supply of new line dairy proteins is expected to begin in 2019. Perfect Dairy will make use of ADM’s fermentation infrastructure for production of this new line of dairy protein. It is expected to reduce production cost and source the product to the market on commercial scale.

Alternative dairy drink industry is estimated at over US$ 20 billion in 2018, posting strong growth over the last five years. This development is influenced by consumer choices towards type of food intake in last couple of years. People are more inclined towards purchasing food product which are sustainable, environment friendly and free of animal usage in any form.

Overall, ConsumerIntel360 expects innovation in dairy protein category to intensify over the next five years. So far innovation in the segment has been driven by developed markets. However, we expect participation from growth markets to increase, focused on developing dairy protein products aligned with local taste to drive market share.
